MARYLAND — It has been 19 months since the University of Maryland Terrapin Ice Hockey team last played an official game. This Saturday, they are finally back after COVID-19 wiped away their entire 2020-21 season. They will be launching their long-awaited 2021-22 season against the Delaware Blue Hens, reigniting their rivalry with a team just up the I-95 highway.
The Terrapins have a plethora of new bodies on their roster, as two-thirds of their players will be making their Maryland debut. However, there are still plenty of players to look out for on opening night.
Liam Eden (Gr) is the team’s best goal scorer and is looking to pick up right where he left off before the pandemic. Tyler McEvoy (Sr), offensive D-man, will slot in the top blueline pairing. Henri Pelletier (So), Aidan Jones (Fr), and Evan Jones (Jr) make up the goaltending group – all netminders are fresh to the team.
While Maryland is entering their first game of the season, Delaware has already skated in multiple contests. They have played the Cincinnati Bearcats twice, winning the first (6-3) and tying the second (4-4). The front two forward lines for the Blue Hens are composed of all upperclassmen who score the vast majority of their goals, so Maryland will look to slow down the opposing top six.
“Opening against a rival will really let us enter the year with a good test,” Assistant Coach Brennen Smith said. Overall, this new look roster will use Saturday night to show what they are made of and attempt to kick off the season on a strong note. Delaware is a perennial stalwart, but Maryland will be ready to rock.
